7 Legendary Players Who Turned Into Legendary Managers

There are some great players all around the world, and also some great managers, but some great players have become some of the world's best managers.  Here is a list of 7 players who achieved success after turning from a player to a manager.

1.JURGEN KLOPP:

It is no surprise that Jürgen is the first in my list, because he was an established player during his playing years at FSV MAINZ 05 and as a manager Jürgen was more successful, UCL finals with Borussia Dortmund and a UCL title with Liverpool. Jürgen is currently one of the best managers in the world.

Jürgen is also known for his famous gegenpress philosophy.  Jürgen is a very strong and a competitive one he has really extracted some good talents around the way such as an alexander-arnold now. Jürgen as a forward played most of his time at Germany and also had a lot of time managing in the Bundesliga.

Jurgen as a player and his transition

Not a very successful striker during his playing years, Jürgen experienced all his success while managing.  Jurgen is a very experiened manger right now and has a lot of trophies to conquer around the world.

2.ANTONIO CONTE:

Antonio Conte is one of the best managers of all time and the best in Juve's history.  Conte absolutely won everything with Juventus but not a single Champions League trophy.  Conte was a very extablished player in his playing days.  Conte Started his career at an Italian club called LECCE and slowly established his dominance as versatile midfielder. Conte started his playing career when he was only 16 and ended his career when he was 35 he was the captain of Juventus during the late 90's.  Conte totally made 418 appearances as a professional footballer.

Conte also started his manager career in Italy.  Conte's first head coach stint was at a SERIE B side Arezzo in 2006-07 season.  For some years Conte was managing SERIE B clubs frequenly then came his first opportunity in managing a SERIE A club, yes it was Atalanta, despite a good start he was sacked and he returned to Serie B club Siena.  Then in 22 may 2011 came his biggest breakthrough, and a dream opportunity.  Yes, that is of managing Juventus he had some good years but resigned in 2014.  Then Conte went on with national team management, he opted to manage the Italian National Team untill UEFA EURO 2016.

Then Conte returned to Club management with Chelsea. Conte tried his level best to get Chelsea to the top of Europe but he could'nt and he was subsequently sacked ahead in 2018 and was replaced by another Italian, Maurizio Sarri.  Some of Conte's best moments as a chelsea manager was winning the FA Cup.

3.CARLO ANCELOTTI:

We have another Italian here, and its no surprise that he is a midfielder.  He was a very decorated one during his playing years.  He started his career at parma in SERIE C and went on to dominate.  He had his best years and last years as a player in the famous Rossoneri, and won European Championships and all others as well.  Carlo was a succesful midfielder more a world class one.  Ancelloti was a classical, creative, and accurate midfielder.  Ancelloti did'nt have enough pace as he would like but he was a team player and known for his vision for passes. Ancelloti excelled in the defensive side of his game as well. Ancelloti would remain as one of the GOATs of all time.

Ancelotti's managing career really was a great success.  He had one heck of a start.  He started his managing career with Reggiana in SERIE B.  Straight away he led them to a  promotion to SERIE A.  Seeing his success as a manager Parma signed him.  When he signed for Parma his team already included some future greats like Gigi Buffon, Cannavaro.  He also had Roberto Baggio on his side the year he signed but he didn't have a good relationship with the Italian.  Ancelotti requested baggio to play as an attacker, but baggio preferred midfield.  The same year baggio transferred to another club and he was very succesfull there.  Ancelotti slowly grew in importance in the footballing world.  He started managing top SERIE A clubs.  But his best time as a manger arrived at the club were he was a legend, yes it was AC MILAN.  Ancelotti led Milan to multiple SERIE A titles and and two UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE titles.

Proud Ancelotti showcasing all of the trophies he won at Milan

Ancelotti led the rossoneri for 9 years, from the 2000-2001 season to the 2008-2009 season.  Ancelotti also led Milan to their first club world cup victory.  Also Ancelotti had managed Milan in 423 official games only Nereo Rocco has more than that.

After resigning from Milan. Ancelotti took charge of Chelsea.  Ancelotti showed his class as a manager once again at the Stamford bridge, by leading Chelsea to a Premier league title in 2010, but he didn’t last long there, he resigned and took charge of Paris saint germain in midseason of 2011-2012 season. Apart from league titles with the team from Paris Ancelotti had life difficult at the Parc des Princes, ancelotti resigned and joined Real Madrid, he led them to an UEFA champions league title in 2014 and once again resigned and moved to Bayern Munich, this started his first adventure at Germany, he led them to Bundesliga titles but he didn’t last long at Munich, ancelotti then moved back to SERIE A as the manager of Napoli. His move to Napoli was a success but he was sacked due to mutual problems with the club director. Then currently this European champion is leading Everton and is looking to lead them to an European entry.  Besides his success and failures as a manager, ancelotti would stand as one of the best managers of all time.

4.ZINEDINE ZIDANE

We have another midfielder on the list and most of you would’ve known his prowess as a player.  Yes the man we are discussing is Zinedine Zidane so called ZIZOU.  Zidane is considered as one of the Greatest football players of all time.  As a player Zinedine absouletely was a terrific midfielder, known for his pace, technique, dribbling and mostly his flair.  Zidane was an absolute legend of the game.  Zidane was a very creative playmaker who could chirp in with one or two goals here and there.  Every Real Madrid fan would never forget his insane left-footed goal in the  champions league final in 2002.  Zidane and beckham formed one of the deadliest midfield combo in the world.  Zidane’s retirement from football was a really heart-breaking news for his fans and all football fans over the globe.  He announced his retirement from football suddenly after France’s defeat to Italy in the World Cup final in 2006.

A moment not to remember again...

That one moment where he lost his cool and ended up being sent off, the moment he would never forget.  He was only 34 at that time and had 3 or 4 years under his back, but the wound of the world cup defeat forced him to retire.  Two years later Zidane had thoughts of returning into club football, but it never happened.

His coaching career however was filled with success and glory he first was hired as an adviser for Real and slowly Zidane entered managing.  Zidane was appointed as the manager of Real Madrid Castilla in 2014 and he replaced Rafa Benitez in 2016.  Straight away zidane started to impress.  Zidane broke the club record of most consecutive wins when he led them to 16 consecutive wins in La liga that year.  But Zidane’s success with Real Madrid in Europe was the one to watch.  He won Three consecutive UEFA champions league titles with Real Madrid

Zidane with a triple treat..

but he resigned in 31 may 2018 after miscommunication with Florentino Perez.  But perez then felt he made a wrong decision in removing zidane, because the following season Real were so poor that the lost 4-1 to Ajax in UEFA champions league Round of 16.  So perez sacked coach Santiago solari and replaced him by Zidane.  Now Real under Zidane are performing well, Real are placed 2nd in La Liga and are doing really well. Zidane is also preparing for a record 4th UCL victory with Real Madrid.

5.PEP GUARDIOLA.

Coming in fifth in our list is Manchester City manager and former Barcelona midfielder  Pep Guardiola.  Pep Guardiola is considered one of the best to have worn the jersey of Barcelona and also one of the best to manage Barcelona.  Guardiola led Barcelona to one Champions League title and multiple La Liga titles.  Guardiola was the mentor and a good friend of Lionel Messi during his time as a manager at the Catalan club.

Guardiola mentoring a future legend.

Guardiola as a player played his best years at F.C.Barcelona.  He was so dedicated hard-working tall taunting figure on the football pitch. The Spaniard played under Johan Cryuff during his playing years.  He played a whopping 11 years at Barcelona.  Guardiola was mostly deployed as a deep lying playmaker.  Guardiola won the Champions league with Barcelona during his playing years and also as a manager with the same team.  Guardiola was a magician in club management.  He is known for his 4-3-3 tactics with much flair.  According to Guardiola tiki-taka is a waste form of tactic.  He is the youngest manager to win a UEFA champions league title to till date.  Also he is the only Barcelona manager to beat their Arch-rivals Real Madrid four times in a row in the El-Clasico.  Guardiola is one of the most succesfull Barcelona managers ever.  Being the main man of Barcelona for 4 years Guardiola took a step ahead as a manager.

In 2013 Guardiola was appointed as the manager of FC Bayern Munchen.  At Bayern Guardiola just could’nt win the German Super Cup, but in his first season he won the UEFA Super Cup and a Club World Cup.  2 years went by and Guardiola’s contract at Bayern came to an end as he was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti.

Guardiola’s next destination was Manchester.  Not Man United.  It was Man City.  City were in a search of a man who could get them success and they found the perfect man in.  Pep Guardiola.  But things didn’t go as he would’ve planned.  Guardiola had a very rough first season under pep guardiola.  That year Guardiola even had thoughts of quitting management forever.  Guardiola finished the season without any trophies.  That was the first time that guardiola finished a season without a trophy.  The next season Guardiola sorted out his team’s defensive problems by bringing in Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Ederson Moares.  Pep’s hard-work paid off as Man City finished the season on a high by winning the Premier League.

Every Single Manager's dream

That season Man city scored over 100 points and Pep signed a contract extension until 2021.  Above all Guardiola is one of the best ever managers in football and will remain to be.

6.DIDIER DESCHAMPS

For the first time we are going to see about a manager who was more impressive in the National team  arena than the Club management.  Yes it is Didier Deschamps of France.  Deshamps is also a midfielder mostly deployed as a Defensive midfielder.  Deschamps played most of his career in france.  Deschamps is the one of the two men on earth to win the FIFA World Cup both as a player and as a manager.  Deschamps’s playing career was limited to 33 years but in that short period Deschamps achieved everything he could.  He won ligue 1 titles with Marsielle and also he was a part of the Marseille team that won the Champions league title in 1993 becoming the first and only club from france to win the UEFA Champions league until now.  Deschamps also ended his career in style by reaching the UEFA Champions League Final with Valencia, that being Valencia’s only UCL final until date.  He was a lucky person during his playing years because he is still only the second captian in the history of the game to have won the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and the UEFA European Championship.

Just two years after his retirement Deschamps turned on to club management.  His first club was Monaco.  He had a prolific start to his Managing career, as Monaco won the Coupe de la ligue and also reached the UEFA Champions League final that year.  But he left the team after the 2005-06 season and went on a pursuit to help his Former team Juventus to get a promotion to SERIE A.  Then he went to manage Marseille, the club which gave him everything in his life.  He won the league title in 2009-10 season and won 2 Coupe de la ligue titles consecutively.  In 2012 he took a large step forward in his career.  He quitted club management and went on to manage the French National Team.  With the France National Team, Deschamps reached the Final of the 2016 European Championship and also won the 2018 World Cup.  He still is being the manager of France and has less intentions to return to club management.  He will stand down as one of the best ever players that France have produced and also one of the best ever managers of  France.

7. JOHAN CRUYFF

Cruyff is by far the best on this list.  There is nothing that Cruyff cannot do in the football pitch as a player.  But he proved it again even after his retirement, by being a manager.  Cruyff is one of the best ever players to wear the Barcelona Jersey and is the best player in the history of Ajax and Netherlands.  He never won a World Cup with Netherlands, but is the Greatest Dutch Player Of All Time.  He is regarded is the rescue man of Barcelona when the club nearly went extinct.  He transformed Barcelona into a different sort of a team, he brought in players like Guardiola, Romario, Laudrup and many others.  He was so praised for his 3-4-3 formation which produced a lot of talents at La Masia to Graduate to the Main team. Cryuff was the first one to introduce "Rondos".

The lesson that cruyff taught Barcelona
Cruyff’s dream team won 4 La Ligas in a row

Some of his best moments at Barcelona include his European title with Barcelona in 1992, which was the first European trophy for Barcelona in all those years.  Cruyff was the one who redefined and revived Barcelona from their tough years.  Cruyff is known for the legacy that he gave to the catalan club.  Besides trophies and titles he gave them the spirit and winning mentality and moreover an identity.  He rescued them from extinction and transformed them into one of the footballing giants of Europe.  If Cruyff wasn’t there at Barcelona during the their tough times then we would  not be seeing an F.C. Barcelona now.  All the titles and fame that Barcelona have today is because of Cruyff.  Because if there was no cruyff at Barcelona then they would’ve been extincted in the 90’s.  Cruyff will stand as a god in all the true fans of Barcelona.  Cruyff is by far the best role-model to young managers and also players.  One of his important disciples is Pep Guardiola.

Cruyff's lessons for pep
Guardiola learnt a lot from Cruyff.  During an interview Pep honestly shared his memories and the influence that Cruyff had on his life. Pep said "I WOULD NOT BE HERE WITHOUT JOHAN CRUYFF".  Cruyff is the man behind the success of a lot of people and even passing away from us, Johan's influence and the lessons that he taught to Barcelona will always remembered.
